Edmonds, Lynnwood and Mountlake Terrace receive $1.9 million grant from Verdant to establish regional bicycle network

In Summary:
Verdant Health Commission decided on January 22, 2014 in favor of funding 2 of the 3 major projects that had applied for significant grant money from their “Building Healthy Communities” program.
One of the funded projects is the former Edmonds/Woodway playfield improvements project. The other regional project is “BikeLink” and will be funded by Verdant for the joint $1.9 million dollars.

Project partners are the Cities of Edmonds, Lynnwood, Mountlake Terrace, with involvement from Edmonds Bicycle Advocacy Group (EBAG), Cascade Bicycle Club (CBC), Swedish/Edmonds, and Community Transit, working together “to establish a regional bicycle network that will provide greater opportunities for individuals and families to bike for recreational and transportation purposes. It will also improve safety for cyclists and drivers.” Verdant’s board voted and agreed to pay the full $1.9 million in the funding request, over three years, 2014-2016.
EBAG and CBC will more than likely be involved in several aspects: volunteer work doing community outreach, gathering data to support the project, as well as assisting with recommendations for signage location, infrastructure improvements needed, bike rack locations, etc.
This was great news for all of us who worked to make a very quickly put together grant application. We (EBAG members) first heard in mid October of the grant money being available, then we wrote our letters of support. Shortly afterward, the City partners put together the grant application in time for the Nov. 1st deadline, and there were a couple follow-up meetings with the Verdant health commission board of directors after that, with members of EBAG and CBC’s staff speaking in support of the project, and Q&A about the grant applications meeting all of Verdant’s criteria, etc. Finally, the project partners have been awarded the grant funds for the regional network BikeLink project.
Several folks on the City of Lynnwood’s staff spearheaded this successful partnership for the grant application process.
